False Teeth Were Never Made of Wood
Washington’s false teeth were really not made from wood. They were created with the use of a combination of gold, ivory, carved animal bone and human teeth purchased from his African American slaves.
What day was really his birthday?
George Washington was actually born on February 11, 1731, not on February 22, 1732. Due to a change in the calendar from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, his birth date automatically changed. It’s according to that calendar that he was born February 22, 1732, which is the date that most people know as Washington’s birthday.
Chief Recruiter
John Adams appointed him to the position of Commander in Chief in 1798 even after his rule as president. Unbeknownst to the former president, the title was apparently a recruitment stunt to try to use Washington’s name to attract more soldiers.
Salutes Everywhere!
He has the highest military rank ever awarded. To anyone. Ever. When he died, Washington was a lieutenant general, but over time, the U.S. military felt that the rank did not reflect his tremendous military achievements. A law was passed that posthumously granted him the rank of General of the United States Armies.
He Defied Death
Washington led troops in numerous military engagements, but despite commanding several well-known victories Washington lost more battles than he won during the Revolutionary War. In the French and Indian War, Washington had two horses shot out from under him and received four bullet holes in his coat as well as one in his hat. This perceived immunity to bullets led one Indian chief to remark that some higher power must be guiding his life.
